NYBC Partners with Local Elected Officials and Hospital Leaders to Promote National Blood Donor Month

On Thursday, January 4, 2024, local elected officials and hospital leaders held a joint press conference with New York Blood Center (NYBC) to celebrate National Blood Donor Month. Their aim was to encourage blood donations and put an end to blood shortages in the region. The press conference was led by NYBCe President and CEO, Dr. Christopher D. Hillyer, who was joined by several community leaders including NYC Fire Department (FDNY) Chief of EMS Operations, Michael Fields, NYC Citywide Administrative Services Commissioner, Dawn Pinnock, NYC Council Member, Lynn Schulman, and respected hospital leaders. At the event, several blood and platelet donors spoke to the media, and a Mayoral Citation issued by NYC Mayor Eric Adams was unveiled.

More than 50 years ago, President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation designating January as National Blood Donor Month. The annual observance is meant to honor voluntary blood donors and encourage more people to give blood at a time when more blood is needed. The weeks following the holiday season are always difficult for the blood supply as school breaks, holiday travel, seasonal illness, and cold weather often contribute to fewer donations. Hospitals and patients rely upon a steady flow of volunteer donors, but the past few years have brought chronic blood shortages nationwide.
